Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in Massachusetts

I offer psychotherapy and psychoanalysis based in Cambridge, MA. In my practice, I see adults of all races, genders and cultures in individual and couple formats. I specialize in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches (also sometimes called “depth therapies”).
My approach is often a fit for individuals who feel curious about themes and patterns they find themselves replaying across different relationships. I think of therapy as a process that increases our capacity hear from a fuller range of emotions, thoughts, beliefs and wishes with the aim of becoming less divided internally and, as a result, more resilient and creative in face of personal and societal challenges. One of the benefits of a psychodynamic approach is the potential for long-term change beyond symptom reduction. I consider therapy to be working when one becomes able to recognize new connections between already existing experiences.
When I think about how this approach differs from the types of therapy that people often encounter when they first look to connect with treatment, two things come to mind. The first is the view that some of our thoughts and feelings can be inaccessible to our awareness, not simply because of inattention, but for psychological reasons that can be discovered through treatment. Another distinguishing feature of depth therapy is that one’s experience of the therapeutic relationship is not just a backdrop or a source of interference to be managed but itself an important part of the treatment. Therapy is a space in which a collaborative experiencing of repeating patterns can be explored. As one’s perspective around these patterns expands through collaborative exploration and experiencing, one ultimately becomes freer to decide which parts of these patterns they would like to keep/repurpose toward new aims and which they might have outgrown.
Examples of the kinds of issues that I frequently work with include (but are not limited to): increasing the capacity to grieve loss, reducing self-criticism, increasing a sense of cohesion and self-worth following traumatogenic experiences, reconciling sources of conflict about the various identities that one inhabits, adjusting to transitions and changes, understanding and modifying personality factors that drive repeating relationship patterns/choices, and strengthening one’s relationship to creativity, interests and vitality.
Most often, people who reach out to me about therapy and psychonalsyis live in Cambridge and the greater Boston area. However, I also frequently work with people located anywhere within Massachusetts. I am a proponent of the role that telehealth plays in increasing access to therapy. I have significant experience conducting remote treatments and thinking about the adjustments and considerations needed to facilitate them. Depending on your particular circumstances, virtual psychoanalysis or psychotherapy may be provided by synchronous video.
